The only $5 New Zealand commemorative coin issued annually
Bats are New Zealand’s only native land mammals and the lesser short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata) is the
only member of its family, Mystacinidae, known to still survive. This ancient species is unique to New Zealand, and
is listed by the Department of Conservation as a ‘species of highest conservation priority’.
The New Zealand Short-tailed Bat is one of the few bats in the world that spends large amounts of time on the
forest floor. It adapted to ground hunting and uses its folded wings to move around. This unique attribute is
highlighted within a circle on the coin that is also representative of the moon (reflecting the nocturnal nature of the
bat). The striking design also features the bat in flight alongside New Zealand native ferns.
